Many of the PNG graphics built in to iOS and also used in apps are actually using Apple's proprietary modification to the PNG format, referred to as CgBI. The modifications to this format prevent them from being viewed by many standard graphic viewers unless they are first converted back to standard PNG format using the iOS SDK.
